Finland Electric Raceabout
Helsinki Metropolia ERA electric car performed strictly second in the international vehicle development competition.
Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Electric Race About (ERA) was successful electric car to the top of the international Progressive Automotive X PRIZE – vehicle development competition in the United States.
Project manager, chief engineer of the Sami Ruotsalainen received a high-level second prize at the award ceremony in Washington D.C. on Thursday 16 September, 2010. During the event, talked – Chairman of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
Electric Race About is a real feat. In almost all college students have done. It is a high-performance electric sports car and the cars took part in perhaps the most impressive. Particular it is, for example, that each wheel has its own motor. ERA was from the outset a favorite car, because it is so beautifully executed, Bob Larsen, the organizers of the competition a technical adviser says.
Helsinki Metropolia’s Automotive Engineering Lecturer Sami Ruotsalainen. The student team was from the beginning of the world’s best electric cars and also managing the project. Showing that Finland will continue and supports the development of electric vehicle industry development.
ERA-electric car you can drive from Helsinki to Tampere on a single charge, consuming 110 kilometers per hour of energy, which is equivalent to 1.6 liters of petrol per hundred kilometers.
The electric car is undoubtedly one of the major responses to today’s energy consumption and environmental problems, says Ruotsalainen.
The competition ERA served as a driver in September, an automotive engineer, graduating from Helsinki Metropolia Tuomo Kinnunen took part in the electric car project from the beginning.
In the competition, we had tough opponents, including large automobile factories. Even though we were in a school outfit, we had an insanely great car compared to others, and not many could hardly believe at first that we were all students. It was nice to show that elsewhere in the world will be well and make do, Kinnunen says.
Just a very good project work experience, which clearly requires work. The time this has taken – and given a lot of time into it, says Kinnunen.
Helsinki Metropolia three-year project with more than 60 partners is the main part of Finnish companies and research institutes. Car design in addition to Metropolia participated in EV technology Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design. In addition, the Lappeenranta University of Technology designed electric vehicle new vehicle-optimized electric motors.
X PRIZE Foundation aims to encourage automotive product development and environmentally friendly energy alternatives and to promote the end of series production and available to consumers. Among approximately one hundred participating team at Electric Race About advanced electric car, a two-seater series. There are three different series, with a cash prize of $ 10 million.
